CANON: Marvel 616
CANON POINT: New Avengers (2015) issue 12
HISTORY: Billy Kaplan Wikia
PERSONALITY:

Billy grew up on the upper east side of manhattan in a very comfortable lifestyle, but he had a lot working against him- as far as his peers were concerned. Skinny, short, nerdy, and gay, Billy knew from a young age that he wasn’t going to fit in and that didn’t bother him. He knew who he was and he wouldn’t apologize for it, or pretend to be someone else. He was comfortable with himself even when he was being bullied by his classmates. He didn’t particularly like that part, but he would never give in to them or their threats- or the occasional bloody nose or black eye. He is sarcastic and sassy which sometimes lead to even more black eyes and bloody noses. Still, as he wasn’t really one for confrontation he started avoiding his biggest bully, taking different routes around school. When he caught his bully picking on someone else he put his foot down and told him off. It was ok to pick on Billy, but Billy wouldn’t stand by and watch someone else get hurt. He protects people who can protect themselves- and even those who can like his own teammates. When the team is told to disbann by Captain America and Iron Man because they are too young, Billy is ready to go against their orders and continue helping people, because it’s the right thing to do.

It’s important to note how big of a nerd Billy is. Self proclaimed and proud. He grows up worshiping superheroes, collecting comics, playing DnD and video games. He has a love and an overabundance of knowledge of pop culture and musicals and even runs the superhero wiki in his world.

He’s a little over protective of those he loves, especially his boyfriend,Teddy, who he would do absolutely anything for. Like try to bring his dead mother back from another dimension (more on that later). Which leads to the fact that Billy tends to leap before he looks. He’s headstrong, and absolutely sure that he is right- as only a teenager can be. When the team is searching for the Scarlet Witch, Billy leaves them in the middle of the night to go investigate Doom’s castle by himself- a really dumb and dangerous thing to do, because he is sure he can handle it himself and that he knows Wanda is in there (he’s wrong, he gets captured, his boyfriend is really pissed about it).

The events of this journey of finding the Scarlet Witch have a few outcomes that shape who Billy is growing into. First it confirms what Billy was already convinced of- that he and Tommy (Speed- his soul twin brother) are the soul sons of the Scarlet WItch and that he inherited his powers from her. It’s also the first fight that has had a negative outcome for the team. Two of their teammates die during the battle with Doom and Billy instantly blames himself. If he had had a better grasp on his abilities or hadn’t forced the team to go after Scarlet Witch Cassie Lang and Vision wouldn’t have died. These events convince the team to disband and sent Billy into a spiral of depression and insecurity that he’s still struggling with.

Billy can be a little bit of a conundrum. He is very secure with who he is as a person, as a gay man growing up in the mid 2000s, but he’s also very insecure about almost everything else, especially after the team disbands. He falls into a deep depression that lasts months, not wanting to interact with the world of anyone in it. It takes Teddy months to get him to finally agree to talk to someone- even if it’s just him. He spends the next few years learning how to deal with his depression, and anxiety, with the fact that he doesn’t think he is good enough and that he messes everything up. He becomes slightly self absorbed during this, neglecting his boyfriend and their relationship to the point that Teddy sneaks out to be a superhero every night for months and Billy doesn’t notice. He doesn’t notice that Teddy is dealing with the death of his mother and his boyfriend’s depression and lying to Billy until Billy catches him sneaking back in. And then it’s like a slap in the face. A wake up call that he had become so self absorbed it took Teddy in tears for him to realize. He resolves to be the best boyfriend ever and makes one of the biggest mistakes of his life. He tries to bring Teddy back his mom and in doing so unleashes an interdimensional parasite into the world.

Of course this brings some of the old team back together, along with new teammates to take care of the problem. During this time Billy learns a lot more about his magical abilities.

His magic has never been very reliable. He can use chaos magic to bend and warp reality. He can basically do whatever he desires, but he has to really want it and mean it. When he first discovered his abilities it was hard to control- because he had no confidence in himself and he was scared of what he could do. Teddy helped with that and gave him his mother’s self help books to try and learn how to focus his wishes. As he got better at it his confidence grew and therefore so did his abilities. What he learns while traveling through worlds to escape the parasite is that he is going to grow up to be the Demiurge. Basically he’s a magical messiah that is going to rewrite the laws of magic which will echo backwards and forwards through time and space. That’s a really heavy burden to learn when you basically think you are a screw up and not worthy of the power you already have. In order to banish the parasite he needs to tap into this power, it manages to do it with Teddy’s help and takes on the full extent of his powers. He sees everything that he could become and will become but he knows enough to know he has a lot more to learn before he can do anything, and he lets the power go again, taking it back down to the normal levels. He accepts that he has a destiny but that he’s not ready for it and he knows he needs to work on himself more.

At the time of application he is working though his mental health issues. As he says, “I get anxiety, I don’t think I’m good enough. I don’t like myself, even though I know- rationally I know- doesn’t matter. I have bad days, bad thoughts, and sometimes, sometimes, yeah, they’re hard to fight. But I don’t let them win everyday and I’m damn sure not going to let them win today.”

CANON POWERS:
Chaos Magic: Billy's main power is the ability to manipulate Chaos Magic, which he inherited from his mother. His magic is based on his wants, when he wants something to happen he has to chant and visualize it happening. As he grows stronger there are some spells he can accomplish without chanting. The chaos magic also gives him the following abilities:

Teleportation: Can teleport himself and others over undetermined distances.
Healing: Can quickly heal others through his spells.
Flight: Billy can use his magic to make himself fly and help others do the same.
Solid Energy Constructs: Billy can manipulate mystical energy to create solid constructs such as disks, shields, force fields, and other projectiles.
Conjuring: Billy can create clothing, decor, and food from seemingly nothing.

OTHER:

Billy wears a medallion of protection that was given to him as a gift, if he’s attacked it will shield him once- long enough for him to get away. I don’t think it’s considered a weapon as it doesn’t retaliate on the attacker, but if he’s not allowed to have it, it can be taken.

CRAU INFO:

    Coming from [community profile] entranceway

Billy spent four years in Wonderland. He had four years of experiences that led to a lot of personal growth. He spent the majority of his time there as a lone canon warrior- separated from his team and his boyfriend. Before Wonderland he had a very codependent slightly unhealthy relationship with Teddy. His time away from that forced him to become more independent and more self sufficient. He had to rely on himself instead of a team for the first time since he was sixteen. He learned how to be by himself and he came to terms with a lot that he didn’t like about himself.

He had some very influential mentors in Wonderland. He had a close relationship with Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, all three from a different universe than his. They trained him in combat, and in tactics, and Steve especially helped teach him how to be a team leader.

Surprisingly, he also had a close relationship with Loki, who taught him how to use his magic, and gave him confidence to be comfortable enough with the amount of power he could wield and how dangerous he could be if he took the wrong steps. The confidence in himself and his power led to confidence in interpersonal relationships. For the first time in 19 years Billy had a lot of friends and people to rely on. He organized movie nights and set up a magical studies library, he learned from people and in turn taught them. All of these things lead to the self confident leader that he is now.

Wonderland was not without its emotional and physical trauma however. Wonderland had what the residents called events, once or twice a month the world would change, taking on the memories of a resident. Sometimes it wouldn’t be so bad- suddenly they were all witches and wizards attending hogwarts, or they lived on a space station. Other times….they were in worlds with zombies, or monsters or political regimes that wanted to wipe them out, or being brainwashed to think they were agents of HYDRA and brainwashing their fellow residents. A lot of people died a lot of the time. But the thing was if someone died, they were resurrected; not only could they die once, but they could die over and over. Billy died three times.

The trauma of dying and how he died is still with him, and always will be- for as long as he keeps those memories anyway. It taught him to use caution, to look before he leaps, and not to trust everyone automatically. Wonderland taught him how to deal with loss and by the end of four years he was a stronger, more confident, outgoing person than he was back home.

MAGIC ABILITY:

Billy will have the ability to conjure up magical barriers/shields. They are mostly impenetrable as long as he has the energy to uphold them. The barriers can be up to 12ft high and 12ft wide but the larger the barrier the more strength it takes to conjure and the faster Billy will tire out.
